On Jan. 24, 2022, a Tropical Storn nicknamed ANA, hit Malawi full on, after having done a lot of damage in Madagascar and Mozambique. Winds reached 60 miles/hour (95km/h) and many trees and homes were damaged. The heavy rains created floods, some which change river courses. In some places, it rained almost 200 liters per square meter (53 gallons per 11 square feet) in 24 hours. Approx. 200,000 people were displaced and 29 lost their lives.
The President of Malawi has declared a state of natural disaster and help is urgently needed. Flooding washed away livestock and crops, and most of the country lost electricity early in the week.
