Extending the church in Kachere

Hope Baptist Church in Kachere is the first church that we planted here in Malawi, back in 2010. I remember even now, we started with a handful of people that left a perverted church, seeking to please the Lord despite the ridicule from other people. In Malawi, a church without a building is no church at all, at least that’s how the culture is, but these 2 families decided to stay pure and faithful to God. They prayed for someone to help and I, at that time, was praying for a village to start a church. Looking back now, I prayed for them and they prayed for me!

In the beginning we met at someone’s house, outside, under a shade tree. After a couple of months we grew to maybe 20-25 people, and we needed some sort of a building. A nice bamboo shack was erected soon and we met there for a while, praising the Lord every Sunday!

We went on our first furlough in 2011 and, after we returned, we were ready to have a real building. To be honest, the bamboo shack was good enough for me, very African and very “romantic”, but it was clear that something more solid and waterproof during the rainy season was needed.

Since then, the church has been growing slowly but consistently, probably the way healthy churches should grow. We never sought to please people, but to please God and my vision was for this church to be a light in Kachere. In 2012 we started the Feeding Centre and, since then, the ministry around the church has grown a lot.

This year, in 2016, almost 4 years since we have the new building and 6 years since the work in Kachere has started, it was clear that something needed to be done again, as the building is now too small to accommodate our people and the visitors. Although it seems it is too early for that, praise the Lord for his work!!! Praise the Lord people are coming to church and the Word of God is being spread in the village and beyond it. This year, we are extending the building of Hope Baptist Church in Kachere!!!

The larger building will seat about 60 extra people, raising the capacity of our church to close to 200! If we continue this way, I predict in a few years we will need a second building, probably at the other end of the village! Why not?

These are just a few pictures of the progress of Hope for the Future Elementary School in Kachere. Men are working on the footing and foundation and very soon we shall see some walls coming up! Praise the Lord!

Vacation 2016

Every year we are trying to schedule a short vacation with the family, usually right after I return from the States. The weather is perfect for it and we find ourselves to need that time together, especially after the separation and the whole year of work.

Nothing is probably as beautiful here as Lake Malawi, an African Great Lake located between Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania. Lake Malawi is the 9th largest in the world, and the 3rd largest in Africa. As far as its depth, it is the 2nd in Africa. Where it excels is at the number of species of fish it is home to, which is more than any other lake in the world! Among other species of fish, it also has more than 1,000 species of cichlids, the vast majority being found nowhere else in the world. I remember last year, when I visited the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, GA, and I found they were proudly displaying a tank with some of these colorful fish of Lake Malawi.

The area where we stayed is called Cape Maclear, probably because the waters there are so crystal clear. When we did the snorkeling, we were able to see all the thousands of colors these fishes have. It truly is an amazing place!

Other than snorkeling, we did tubing, swimming in the pool and in the lake, kayaking, sailing, eagle feeding and a stunning sunset watch on the lake, from the top of one of their boats. Although we only stayed there for 4 days, we enjoyed our time and we recharged our batteries for another year of work for the Lord.

The majority of pictures were taken from the resort we stayed at or from the lake. However, the last picture you see above, with me and the yellow kayak, was taken on an uninhabited island, Thumbi West Island. I rowed there several times, enjoying the quietness which allowed me to spend valuable time in prayer. There is nothing like the feeling you are all alone with the Lord, in the middle of lake, away from everyone else.

Work on Bible School continues…

Hope for the Future’s Bible Seminary in Zomba will train national pastors and send them to the villages of Malawi, for the purpose of planting churches and reaching people for Christ. We have now resumed the work on the building, the roof being the part that will be put up. The Lord provided almost all the money necessary and, although we still lack approximately $5,000, I believe that we will be able to make some good progress.

I would love to see this project completed and see the ministry started and working. We will have foreign pastors and teachers coming over and training the Malawians and I can already see the amazing impact it will have on tens of thousand if not hundreds of thousands of lives. Just think, if we train 100 men in the first 5 years, they will go back to 100 villages and start 100 churches. If every church has 100 or more members, we’re now talking about over 10,000 people reached with the Gospel. The initial 100 pastors will be trained to also train others themselves, so if every church sends just 1 man, we can reach an amazing number of people and villages. Compare that number with a handful of missionaries that are in the Southern Region of Malawi, and you will understand the importance of such a Bible School. The effectiveness of the work will be infinitely greater.

Corn Muheriwa

Saturday, September 3, we took the second transport of corn for this year, to the people of Muheriwa, village where no food has grown this year due to the severe drought. If you remember, last year we did the same, after the severe rains have washed away everything these subsistence farmers have planted.

The corn was bought on August 1, and the first transport was taken immediately after that. Here are some pictures from the latest distribution:

Kachere Plan

As the Lord provided all the money necessary to build and run a Primary School in the village of Kachere, I thought of sharing with you a Google Maps view over the ministry we have in that place. I was happy to see that Google updated their maps for Malawi and the Feeding Centre is now visible!!!

The colored map attached to this post show you the important parts of the ministry in Kachere. I highlighted in blue the place where we have the Feeding Centre and where the Hope Baptist Church is. In green, it is the two pieces of land that will form one, for the purpose of the Primary School. The little piece in grey is land we don’t own yet, but for which we are praying.

Kachere is the village where the Lord first directed us, it being now the most developed village of its kind for many miles. When we first got there, sometimes in 2011, there was no Christian Church, no Feeding Centre and not even a reliable water source. Now, after all these needs have been accomplished, they will also have a School.

Pray for us as we embark on this new project. There is a lot to do and a lot of work. Building seems to be the easiest thing to do. Between finding good teachers, preparing the curriculum and making sure we do everything right, our hands are full.

Updates on website

Starting with today, September the 3rd, I have started working on a new version on our website. www.mission2malawi.com has been unchanged since 2009 and recently, due to different problems experienced, I have decided to heavily modify it.

The new look will be better and more informative. It will give you, the reader, everything you need to know in the shortest amount of time. The landing page will now be in English language and contain quick info about the ministry, projects and financial information. The blog will be in a separate side of the page and will continue to be updated regularly.

The previous site, the one you’ve been used to, will continue to exist at: http://mission2malawi-eng.blogspot.com. Please note that it will no longer be updated. Every new post will appear on this new site.

Botez în Chamba

Dacă ne urmăriți și pe Facebook, deja știți de botezul nou-testamental care a avut loc în satul Chamba, acolo unde recent am început să lucrăm. 37 de persoane s-au hotărât să facă acest pas de ascultare față de Domnul, iar bucuria de duminica trecută a fost pe măsură.

Împreună cu familia și cu Stanley ne-am dus în acest sat și eu am avut onoarea de a îi boteza pe toți cei care au luat această decizie. După botez, am avut o masă de părtășie, la care a fost invitată și biserica noastră din Moyupyu.

Slăvit să fie Domnul pentru modul în care încă lucrează în Malawi și în lumea întreagă. Încă mai există oameni care nu sunt ai Lui și încă mai există inimi nepredate Lui. Nu există nici un creștin care să nu aibă nimic de făcut, deși există foarte mulți care nu fac nimic.

Mesajul păstorului Maere

Fratele pastor Maere slujește în biserica din Muheriwa, acolo unde recent am reconstruit clădirea bisericii și am săpat o fântână de apă. De-a lungul anilor, această biserică a rămas credincioasă, fiind chiar un exemplu pentru multe biserici în Malawi care se clatină la cea mai mică adiere de vânt.

În urmă cu câteva zile am auzit că fratele păstor și familia dânsului trec prin perioade extrem de grele. În acel moment, ei nu au mâncat nimic de 3 zile și situația lor devenea tot mai gravă. Bineînțeles, a trebuit să îl ajut, de aceea l-am chemat la casa misiunii.

Ajuns aici, ne-a povestit situația gravă din satul unde lucrează și cum mulți oameni mor de foame.

Se estimează că până la finalul acestui an, peste 8 milioane de oameni vor suferi de foame. Unii dintre ei vor mânca doar o dată pe zi, cei mai mulți nici măcar atât. Vor fi multe înmormântări și foarte mulți oameni bolnavi.

Până atunci, vedem cum situația generală se înrăutățește. Niciodată până acum nu am auzit oameni să sufere în luna Iulie. Au trecut totuși doar câteva luni de la ultima recoltă și oamenii ar trebui să aibă mâncare din belșug. În acest an, însă, nu a fost așa.

Așa cum știți, marea majoritate a Malawienilor trăiesc în mediul rural și depind 100% de ceea ce le oferă pământul pe care îl lucrează an de an. Recolta este direct legată de sezonul ploios iar dacă ploile nu vin așa cum trebuie, atunci nici oamenii nu au mâncare în acel an.

Anul trecut, ploile au venit în cantitate prea mare și grădinile au fost pur și simplu spălate. Oamenii au plantat din nou și ploile au curățat totul încă o dată. Anul acesta, pe de altă parte, ploile nu au venit aproape deloc. Defapt, în satul Muheriwa, nu a plouat și oamenii nu au plantat nimic. Acest fenomen, de ploi reduse după un an de ploi torențiale se numește El Nino.

Din această cauză, fratele păstor și biserica din Muheriwa trece prin perioade extrem de grele. Adevărul este că noi nu îi vom înțelege niciodată, deoarece nu înțelegem ce înseamnă foamea. Noi nu am experimentat niciodată ce înseamnă să pierzi un copil pentru că a murit de foame. Oamenii aceștia se luptă să supraviețuiască, mâncând semințe, rădăcini și tot felul de lucruri care nu sunt destinate oamenilor.

Haidem să facem ceva și să îi ajutăm. Ei sunt frații și surorile noastre, până la urmă. Avem două soluții:

1. Soluția pe termen scurt. Oamenii mor de foame chiar în acest moment și, pe termen scurt, putem să îi ajutăm cu mâncare. 25 de euro va asigura minimum de mâncare pentru o familie, o lună întreagă. 25 de euro costă un sac de porumb. Avem nevoie de aproximativ 4,000 pentru întreaga biserică, timp de 6 luni, până la următoarea recoltă.

2. Soluția pe termen lung. Pe termen lung trebuie să îi ajutăm să se ajute pe ei înșiși. Nu vom putea să îi hrănim în fiecare an, însă putem să facem ceva ca să îi ajutăm să facă ei înșiși acest lucru: educația. Vrem să construim o Școală Primară, acolo unde copiii să primească educația necesară pentru o viață diferită. Din cauza sărăciei, mulți copii nu merg la școală. Crescând în familii sărace, ei continuă să trăiască în același fel, neavând nici o oportunitate în viață. Educația poate schimba acest lucru. Școala + primul an de funcționare costa aproximativ 60.000 dolari.

Dacă vreți să faceți o diferență în lumea aceasta, luați legătura cu noi ca să aflați modalități de a ajuta în mod concret. Banii pentru mâncare îi strângem noi, însă banii pentru Școală îi strânge o biserică din Statele Unite. Nu știu exact cât avem strâns în acest moment, însă nu cred că am ajuns la 10%. Dacă doriți, mai degrabă, să trimiteți ajutorul direct în conturile noastre (fie pentru mâncare sau pentru școală) puteți face acest lucru folosind oricare dintre conturile noastre bancare deschise la Banca Transilvania (în partea dreaptă a acestei pagini) sau prin intermediul PayPal.

Oricum și în orice fel, haideți să îi ajutăm pe acești oameni. Vă rugăm să ne contactați și să confirmați suma și scopul. Vă mulțumim.
